When Your Denture Stops Fitting, You Have Two Real Options
Your denture used to sit tight and now it rocks when you chew, so a reline has likely come up. Most practices around Tewksbury will offer one. A reline resurfaces the inside of the denture so it grips your ridge again. We don’t do hard relines here. We remake the denture instead, because a new one fits better. The denture work we do is designed digitally and made right here in the practice. You’ll come away knowing what a reline fixes and what it leaves untouched. You’ll also see the two times we still use one.

A remake is better in two years, and it decides what you’re wearing for the next seven.
What Does a Denture Reline Actually Do?
A reline resurfaces only the side of the denture that sits against your gums. The teeth stay exactly where they are, and so does the base you already paid for. There are two kinds. A soft reline uses a pliable material and is really a tissue conditioner. It calms sore gums for weeks, not years. A hard reline rebuilds that inner surface in rigid acrylic and is meant to last.
What neither one touches is everything above the fitting surface. Worn-flat teeth survive a reline. A bite that has closed down survives it. A base that has been repaired twice survives it. You are paying to fix one layer of an appliance whose other layers have aged at the same rate.
Why Do Dentures Stop Fitting In The First Place?
The appliance didn’t change shape, and your jaw did. Bone under a missing tooth stops getting the pressure that keeps it dense, so the ridge flattens year after year. Massachusetts expects this early. MassHealth folds any reline needed in the first 12 months into the original denture payment. The first year of change is treated as normal rather than as a fault.
What varies is how fast it keeps going. Rate of loss depends on your age at extraction, your general health, and whether anything still loads that bone. Two people fitted the same week can be years apart by the fifth. Results vary, which is why the intervals below are a floor rather than a schedule.
Why Don’t We Do Hard Relines?
Because a remade denture fits better, and here it isn’t slower. We design and mill dentures digitally and fabricate them in house. That turns a new denture around in 10 to 14 days. Sending a case out to an outside laboratory runs 3 to 4 weeks, every single time. Once a remake costs days rather than a month, patching the old appliance stops making sense.
The fit is the real argument. A hard reline rebuilds one surface against a ridge that has already moved. The teeth and the bite have moved too. A digital remake is built to the whole mouth you have today. A scanned and milled fit beats anything rebased by hand. Every remake also resets the teeth and the bite, which a reline never touches. So we don’t offer hard relines. We remake instead, and we say so before you ask.
So When Do We Reline?
Two situations, and both are temporary by design. Neither is a way of putting off a decision, and neither costs you extra.
- An immediate denture we placed the day your teeth came out, while the ridge is still settling underneath it.
- A soft liner used as a tissue conditioner during active treatment, to settle sore or inflamed gums.
- A transitional step to keep you comfortable while your new denture is being made.
If you are in active treatment with us, any soft reline is already inside your treatment fee. There is no separate reline charge here. Relining gets you to the finished appliance. It isn’t a product we sell on its own, so nobody here has a reason to steer you toward one.

That table holds a real tension and it’s worth naming. Coverage pays for a reline more often than for a denture. On paper the reline looks like the thrifty move. Our position is that it buys you a worse appliance for longer. Private plans run their own intervals and annual maximums, so read your schedule of benefits rather than the summary page.
What If A Denture Isn’t The Right Answer At All?
Sometimes no removable denture is going to work well on your ridge. Relining one is the worst possible response to that. Where bone loss is advanced, a lower denture can stay loose no matter how precisely it’s built. That is the most common version of this conversation. We will tell you that rather than sell you another appliance. Knowing when to stop offering the easier treatment is a large part of what the Kois curriculum teaches.

What is the disadvantage of relining a denture?
It restores fit and nothing else. Worn teeth, a closed-down bite and a cracked base all survive a reline untouched. The American Dental Association notes that adhesives are not a remedy for ill-fitting dentures. Those need relining or replacing before sores develop. Soft liners carry a second drawback. The material is porous and hardens over time, so it needs redoing sooner.
Are digital dentures better than regular dentures?
They fit more precisely. The mouth is scanned and the denture is milled from that scan, rather than shaped by hand. That accuracy is the whole reason we remake rather than reline. Cleveland Clinic puts the average denture lifespan at seven to 10 years with proper care. A better starting fit is what gets you to the far end of that range.
What are the disadvantages of digital dentures?
The design is only as good as the scan, so a rushed appointment produces a rushed appliance. Milled materials also behave differently from traditional acrylic, and a few patients prefer the feel of what they had. Daily care does not change at all. Mayo Clinic notes that most types have to stay moist or they lose their shape. That holds for a milled denture as much as a pressed one.
Does insurance pay for a reline or a new denture?
Both, on different clocks. MassHealth covers replacement once every 84 months and relines once every three calendar years for members 21 and over. Only laboratory-processed relines and rebases are covered, so a chairside reline elsewhere comes out of pocket. There is no reline fee here at all, since soft relines during active treatment sit inside your treatment fee
